Eagle volleyball falls to Patriots

Friday, September 12, 2008

The South Putnam volleyball team lost to Owen Valley in three games Wednesday night, 25-14, 25-9 and 25-22. Although her team was playing a very strong Patriot squad, Eagle coach Jill Newton could not hide her frustration.

"We did not play well tonight," Newton said. "Our communication was not there and we simply did not attack the ball. We looked like we were going through the motions instead of playing competitively. If we want to win, we need to show up ready to play every match. I was really disappointed in our efforts tonight."

Sophomore Ashley Wombles, who led the Eagles with seven blocks and three kills, had a good night at the net.

"One bright spot of the night was Ashley Wombles. She made some really great plays at the net and was really quick with her hands," Newton said.

Brooke Boetjer, Emily Dabkowksi and Wombles were co-leaders with three kills. Katelyn Sibbitt had four points and eight digs. Kaleigh Miller had five assists.

The South JV won in two games, moving its record to 5-0.

"Coach Jannette Roberts has done a really nice job with them," Newton said. "They work hard and play together as a team.

The Eagles (4-4) were back in action with Eminence on Thursday. They will next face Cloverdale in the opening round of the Putnam County Tournament at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at North Putnam.
