Two face burglary charges

BAINBRIDGE -- Two men were formally charged Tuesday in connection with an attempted burglary on a Bainbridge business.

Joseph Ivan Schloegl, 31, of Mooreland and Robert Haney, 25, of Indianapolis were in Putnam County Circuit Court after being accused of trying to break into Millennium Trailer Sales at about 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Both were charged with Class C felony attempted burglary, and Haney was also charged with Class A misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

A report prepared by Putnam County Sheriff's Department Deputy Josh Higgins said he and Deputy Anthony Brown were sitting stationary running handheld radar in front of the state highway garage on U.S. 36 Monday when they heard an alarm going off. The deputies got in their cars and headed off.

"Deputy Brown informed me that the alarm was coming from Millennium Trailer sales," Higgins said.
Brown then told Higgins he had witnessed a full-size truck pull out of a bean field next to Millennium at a high rate of speed. The truck sped off down U.S. 36. Higgins went after the truck, while Brown went to Millennium to check on the alarm.

Higgins followed the truck, which was still traveling at a high rate of speed, into Bainbridge. The driver of the truck pulled the vehicle over on Maple Street, Higgins' report said. Schloegl was the driver of the truck, Haney the passenger.

Higgins asked both men for their driver's licenses. On the way back to his car, Higgins said, he noticed several pry bars and a tool box in the bed of Schloegl's truck.

"Officer Brown informed me over the radio that the service entrance door of Millennium Trailer Sales had been pried open," Higgins said. "Upon walking around the Millennium building, I noticed the parts and service door was pried open," Brown said in his report. "The meter next to the dor had been ripped off, and the electrical cable was cut in two."

Brown also told Higgins that tracks from the road led through the bean field to a section of fence that had been cut at the rear of the Millennium property. At that point, Higgins asked Scholegl to exit his truck. When he did, "bean stubble fell out of the truck and onto the road," Higgins said,

Higgins also noticed "a lot of beans and weeds hanging from the front of the truck and falling onto the road."

Higgins called for back-up, and Schloegl and Haney were read their rights. Both were asked if they wanted to make statements.
"Mr. Schloegl had no information to give in reference to the burglary, and Mr. Haney requested the presence of his attorney," Higgins said.
Both men were transported to the Putnam County Jail. At book-in, a clear plastic bag of marijuana was located in Haney's pants pocket, Brown said in his report.

Bond for both men was set at $20,000 cash only. Their pre-trial conferences have been set for Nov. 20.

Class C felonies are punishable by up to eight years in prison.

  • This could go on a stupid criminal crime show. Great job to all involved for acting so quickly.

The Sheriff's Department was out doing their job where they were suppose be, not on interstate 70 or back at the jail doing the bosses job. This new "Sheriff in town" thing seems to be working.

I hope more arrest are made on Idiots like this until they figure out we are out patrolling again. We will not stand for our businesses and homes to broken into. They can not steal our ATVs and copper. By golly we are taking our lives back.

  • Reading this story reminds me of the two guys who robbed a bank several years ago and how their get-away car ran out of gas as they were leaving the bank's parking lot.

  • Another story about thieves...well...it seems like they tried. Anyone going to talk about what good people they are, how hard these times are? Or...are these guys strangers to your city?
