Eagles battle Cadets

Saturday, October 4, 2008

The South Putnam middle school football teams hosted Cascade Wednesday night, splitting a pair of games with the Cadets. The Eagle seventh grade defeated the Cadets 21-0, while the eighth grade fell 22-8.

The seventh grade game was a scoreless tie at the half, but the Eagles turned in on after the break.

"We had a tremendous effort on both sides of the ball in the second half," said Eagle coach Nathan Mullis. "Great job by the offensive line. They opened up some good holes in order for our running back, Sawyer Arnold, and one of our quarterbacks, Wes Riner, to gain a lot of yards on the ground.

The defense caused a couple of turnovers and Jacob Williams caused a lot of havoc for the offensive line. The seventh grade is 5-1.

In spite of the loss, the coach applauded the effort of the eighth grade following the contest. A few big plays made the difference.

"We had a tremendous effort out of our players in this game," Mullis said. "We had a couple of turnovers and a couple of blown coverages that killed us. Our running back Lewie Knoy threw our touchdown to Justin Bumgardner on about a 70-yard halfback pass.

"Our defense played strong, but needs to improve in a couple key areas," he added. "We have two games left, both are county games."

The 8th grade is 1-5.

The Eagles visit North Putnam at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
