Lady Tiger Cubs claim Putnam County Paddle
The Greencastle volleyball team has suffered plenty of losses this season; however, they are choosing not to make it a lost season.
On Thursday, they the biggest of their year's four wins by defeating South Putnam in five games to claim the Putnam County Paddle.
The Lady Tiger Cubs won the first game, but dropped the next two. They then came back to win games four and five for a 25-17, 24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory.
Greencastle's season (4-21, 2-3 WCC) has certainly been a challenging one for coach Trish Lowe, but she certainly had reason to smile on Thursday.
"What a great night for Tiger Cub volleyball," Lowe said. "We came to play and did our jobs well enough to pull off the win. Brooke Lewis really stepped it up tonight."
The squad's lone senior, Lewis collected 14 points, four aces, 12 kills and 31 digs while going 10-of-12 serving.
Sophomore Mallory Miller also had a big night, leading GHS in points (19), assists (36) and digs (40). She was also a perfect 28-of-28 from the service line. Chelsea Samuels led with 17 kills and two stuff blocks, while Braden Amis had 10 blocks and a stuff.
As sectional approaches, Lowe has a team that looks to be finding itself at clutch time.
"I am so proud of our girls and their determination. We are doing the right things for this time in the season," she said.
From the Eagle perspective, coach Jill Newton gave GHS the credit for playing with more desire than her team.
"Greencastle won because they played like they wanted to win. We unfortunately did not," Newton said.
Kaleigh Miller led South with 14 points and 19 assists. Abbie Trauner had nine kills and three aces. Katelyn Sibbitt had 24 digs, while Brooke Boetjer had 12 blocks.
In junior varsity action, South Putnam defeated Greencastle 25-10, 25-11. The Tiger Cub JV is now 3-18.
Greencastle is back in action at 9 a.m. today in the Cascade Invitational. South Putnam visits Cascade at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
