Saturday, October 18, 2008

The South Putnam volleyball team won its last regular season match of the season on Thursday, defeating West Vigo 25-15, 25-21, 25-17. The Eagles finish the season 11-14.

Coach Jill Newton was pleased with her team's performance as they prepare for sectional play.

"This win was a great way to end our regular season," Newton said. "I saw a lot of teamwork tonight and the girls just really played well. I made some new changes in our lineup and I was really proud of the way the girls adjusted; we had only one day to practice with these changes."

Seniors Oceaia Boetjer, Kaleigh Miller and Abbie Trauner all performed well on their senior night. Boetjer finished with six points, three aces, four kills and 19 digs. Miller collected seven points, seven assists and a dig. Trauner had two points, six kills, six blocks and nine digs.

"It was a nice win for the seniors for their final home game," Newton said.

The JV also won, to finish its season 12-7.

"I saw improvement in the girls throughout the entire season. The girls continued to improve on their skills and their desire to win," said JV coach Janette Roberts. "I am proud of finishing the season with a winning record and being the County Champs."

South Putnam will open sectional play at 6 p.m. next Thursday when they face Cascade at Covenant Christian.
