The Putnam Hospital Guild awarded Charles David "Dave" Young the Volunteer of the Year award during its annual luncheon Tuesday at the hospital.

Young said he was "surprised" to receive the award.

He is "very deserving of this award," said Millie See, who presented the award and also a member of the guild.

Young joined the organization in 1998, when male volunteers were needed in the physical therapy department. He transported patients and helped with their therapy during his eight years in the department.

He currently volunteers at the information desk in the medical building.

Young gives more than 50 hours per month to volunteering at the hospital. He says it gives him a "good" feeling.

His wife, Jackie, volunteers her time at the senior center. They have been married for more than 60 years.

"Anytime you round the corner, Dave is always there helping someone," said the Rev. Williams.

Young says he will volunteer for as long as he is able.

Putnam County Hospital Guild installed new officers for the 2009-2010 year. They are (from left), Sarah Kerr, secretary; Norma Hurst, president; Kay Thomas, vice-president; Carolyn Flint, member-at-large; and Fran Allen, treasurer.

The organization has volunteers in several departments of the hospital.

It provides more than volunteers. A donation of chairs was made to the oncology department by the organization. The gift shop is a source of pride and joy to members of the guild. They have many volunteers who strive to maintain it.

There are currently 162 members in the Putnam County Hospital Guild.
