Trial dates set for burglary suspects

Two men charged with Class C felony attempted burglary were in Putnam County Circuit Court Thursday for pretrial conferences.

Joseph Ivan Schloegl, 31, of Mooreland and Robert Haney, 25, of Indianapolis are accused of trying to break into Millennium Trailer Sales in the early morning hours of Sept. 29. Haney was also charged with Class A misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Trials for Schloegl and Haney were set for Feb. 25, with final pretrial conferences on Feb. 12. Any plea agreements in the cases must be filed by Jan. 29.

Both suspects had initial hearings on Sept. 30. Bond for both was set at $20,000 with 10 percent allowed. Schloegl posted bond on Oct. 1, while Haney has been in jail since his arrest.

Schloegl hired his own attorney, John Hovanec of Indianapolis. Schloegl also has two cases pending in Henry County, where he is facing charges of class D felony receiving stolen property and Class A misdemeanor impersonation of a public servant. He is set to go to trial for those offenses on Jan. 14.

Haney had filed a motion for bond reduction, but withdrew it because he was informed there are holds on him for misdemeanor battery and criminal mischief charges in Johnson County.

"Since I have a hold, I'd rather just stay," he said.

Haney had originally said he wanted to hire his own counsel, but requested and was granted a public defender Thursday.

Haney was convicted in 2002 of Class C felony burglary in Johnson County.

A report prepared by Putnam County Sheriff's Department Deputy Josh Higgins said he and Deputy Anthony Brown were sitting stationary running handheld radar in front of the state highway garage on U.S. 36 on Sept. 29 when they heard an alarm going off. The deputies got in their cars and headed off.

Brown told Higgins he had seen a truck pull out of a bean field next to Millenium and take off down U.S. 36 at a high rate of speed, court documents said. Higgins went after the truck and Brown went to Millennium to check on the alarm.

Higgins stopped the truck in Bainbridge. Shortly after the stop, Brown radioed Higgins and told him the service entrance door at Millennium had been pried open.

When Schloegl exited the truck at Higgins' request, bean stubble fell out. Higgins called for backup, and Schloegl and Haney were arrested and transported to the Putnam County Jail.
