Vandals Drain town water tank

FILLMORE -- At 2 a.m. Sunday morning vandals opened two fire hydrants in the Town of Fillmore. Over the next three hours, the Town's 100,000 gallon water tank was drained and another 114,000 gallons was spilled onto the ground Fillmore Town Council President Jeff Osborn told the Banner Graphic.

"In addition to the water that was lost, it took another 100,000 gallons to refill the water tank (for a total loss of 314,000 gallons)," said Osborn.

"Because of this vandalism, the tank and water lines were virtually dry for a period of several hours. Several town residents were inconvenienced by the lack of water early Sunday morning," reported Osborn.

As a precaution, a 24-hour "boil water order" was issued at 5:30 a.m. shortly after the problem was reported.

A police report was filed at 6 a.m. and police are following up on several leads.

"If the violators are arrested, the Town of Fillmore will press charges and request that the crime be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," noted Osborn.

  • How would this loss of water affect that community and its fire dept? I wonder if that equates in the severity of the offense? It seems like that would have been a bad time for a serious size fire.

  • I don't blame who ever done this......Filthmore is getting very bad maybe they were just trying to flood the town and hope maybe some of the junk cars laying around peoples houses and all the other junk laying around would float away!!!!!!

  • This was wrong!!!! Especially when the residents are going to have to pick up the tab. Please stop the madness, it will only get worse, 314,000 gallons is alot of water and I can't afford the water I use now. For a family of 3 I'm paying between 125. and 175 per month. And that doesn't include trash removal as in Greencastle. If it goes up anymore I'm going to have to move, selling is not an option because no one will buy a house in Fillmore because of the water bills/ So it would just be another empty house, there are 9 empty house on main Street alone. Save the town don't ruin it.

  • Yes, but you still have to use the sewer and thats were all the moneys at. My water may run 40. but the sewage would be 100. Then you have to pay for the meter to be removed or pay for it being there.

    Some people that built new homes on the northwest end of town were not made to use it though. How did that happen and why are they not made to sign up now? Anyone Know?
