Seniors reminded of tax credit

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS -- State Rep. Nancy Michael (D-Greencastle) is reminding area seniors that they still have until Dec. 31 to file for a new credit that will reduce their property taxes.

"People over 65 years of age still do have time to file for this credit, which was part of the property tax reforms passed by Legislature," Michael said. "You can apply for the credit at your local auditor's office."

To qualify for the credit and have it in place for 2009, an individual must:

* Be at least 65 years of age

* Have a gross adjusted income of less than $30,000 (on a single filing) or $40,000 (for a joint return)

* Own a homestead with a gross assessed value of less than $160,000.

"This credit is designed to protect homeowners who see their net property taxes increase by more than 2 percent from the previous year," Michael said.

Local seniors can file for the credit through the office of the Putnam County Auditor. For more information, call 653-5513.
