Poor rebounding, free throw shooting plague Lady Clovers
CLOVERDALE -- Cloverdale's girls gave up too many offensive rebounds and missed too many free throws Friday in a 64-47 loss to Monrovia in a West Central Conference basketball game on the Clovers' court.
"I didn't like giving up 22 offensive rebounds and we made only 12-of-23 free throws," Cloverdale coach James Wade said. "If you put the rebounding and the free throws together, I'm not saying it would have been a different outcome, but it would have been a different game."
The Clovers (2-7, 0-2 WCC) played without 6-foot senior center Elizabeth Cheatham, their tallest player who has an injured left ankle. She missed three games in a row earlier this season, played in a couple and is out indefinitely.
"Elizabeth never has healed properly," Wade said. "She's definitely out until past Christmas break."
With Cheatham out, the Clovers struggled on the boards against Monrovia's 5-foot-10 Jessica Standeford, who had nine rebounds, and 5-foot-10 backup Cassie Kaiser, who had seven. They also combined for 15 points.
Monrovia out-rebounded the Clovers, 38-34, and also had less turnovers, 10 to 18. The Bulldogs took 62 field goal attempts, making 25 (40.3 percent) compared to Cloverdale's 47 shots and 16 made (34 percent). Monrovia also made 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) from the foul line.
"We need to keep plugging away," Wade said. "It's a long season. This will help us grow as a team. We'll get better. Other than our game against Greencastle, we haven't quit. We played a lot better tonight as far as attitude and effort than we did against Greencastle."
Kristin McCammon scored a game-high 19 and had six rebounds for the Clovers. Allie Franklin had 10 points.
Monrovia never trailed. The Bulldogs led 12-10 late in the first quarter when they went on a 9-1 run to take a 23-11 lead.
Cloverdale played catch-up after that. The Clovers were behind 32-22 at halftime, but Monrovia broke out to a 16-point advantage by scoring the initial six points of the second half.
The Clovers narrowed the gap to 11 three times, the last at 49-38, but never got closer.
