Historic barn holds many treasures
The William Eaglesfield House Estate sits just over the Putnam County line in Clay County. The former estate built in 1855 has a beautiful home and three-story barn, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Homes.
Since the Civil War construction, the house has been a home for several families, a way station, restaurant, motel and apartment house and a totally self-sustaining northern plantation with a smoke house, fresh water well, grape arbor and fruit trees as well as several acres of garden.
At one time the barn, which was photographed and published in the 2008 Country Store Calendars, housed up to 40 horses and other livestock to provide food and livelihood to the owners.
In 2005, Robert Hein purchased the property and began refurbishing the barn and grounds back to pre-Civil War grand style.
The family has remodeled the first two floors of the barn into an indoor antiques mall with up to 35 booths for vendors, along with a snack bar.
The historic Livery Stable Antique Mall will be a recreation of a prior stable mall similar to one the Hein family operated in Lowell, Ind. many years ago.
In addition to the Livery Stable Antique Mall there is also an open air weekly Flea Market with spaced for up 100 vendors and ample parking on the back of the 17-acre property.
Robert Hein passed away in September 2007 and left the estate to his family members including daughters Bette Anne Hein-Brewer, Rockville, Lisa Hein-Reese, Indianapolis, nephew Justin Hein, Rockville and Robert's son Bob Hein. All of these family members have been involved in the restoration of the Livery Barn and property.
The Antique Mall is open from May to November from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
