Unexpected taxes are a hindrance

Friday, January 30, 2009

To the Editor:

I am a first time homeowner.

I bought my house on contract in December of 2006. The contract specified that the taxes due and payable in 2007 were the responsibility of the seller.

In January of 2008 I applied for the Homestead and Mortgage credits on my property taxes. Imagine my surprise when I found out I had to pay the full amount of taxes due for 2007 payable in 2008, over $3,000 as opposed to about $600.

No one I spoke to in the county government was aware of any way that I could appeal and get the tax bill reduced. One of the clerks commented, "This happens all the time."

I think the citizens of Indiana should petition the government for redress.

If you would like to join the discussion about how we can best do this, write to me at 112 S Grant Ave, Crawfordsville, IN 47933 or you can join an online group at Yahoo!, called "fair-tax-credit" or email fair-tax-credit@yahoogroups.com .
