PCPL still seeking microfilm machine

Putnam County Public Library was looking to purchase a new microfilm machine for its patrons and staff.

In December 2008, sales representative, Brett Passineau, from S-T Imaging, Inc., spoke to board members about an ultra new ST200X. This machine has the capabilities of clearer viewing on a computer screen, high quality printing, e-mailing documents, saving to a flash drive and more.

Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne -- largest genealogical library in the state -- currently owns eight of the ST200X and said no money has been spent on repairs or maintenance since they were purchased.

Library board members discussed the necessity of purchasing the new microfilm machine during its meeting Wednesday.

Director Alice Greenburg told board members the machine will have to be replaced at some point due to the inability to get replacement parts or service done to the current machine.

After reviewing the current machine's usage among other things, the board decided against the purchase at this time. They will wait for a more critical time to replace the microfilm machine.

Board members have hopes the cost of a new machine will go down in time. As of now, the current microfilm is fulfilling its duties.
