Roachdale to purchase new cable locator

ROACHDALE -- The Roachdale Town Council held a very short meeting Tuesday night with only two motions on the table.

They approved the quote for a new cable locator for the town and tabled reviewing an ordinance.

Town Board President Bill Long announced that news about the Indiana Street project should be available Wednesday.

"We'll know a lot more at the next meeting and will let people know what is going to take place. We hope the community will work with us as they shut down portions of the street," said Long.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) awarded the Roachdale Town Council $676,000 in Local Public Agency (LPA) Group IV funds last August.

Council members voted earlier this year to apply for the federal matching funds which will be used in road construction of Indiana Street from Railroad Street to S.R. 236.

Town officials made their case before an award panel at the INDOT Crawfordsville District offices on July 10. The panel's decision to choose the Roachdale project was confirmed July 29 by a selection committee in Indianapolis.

Roachdale was one of five municipalities competing for $3.5 million in District LPA Group IV funding. This funding goes to cities and towns with populations less than 5,000. Additionally, these communities must be located outside of urbanized areas with metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs). More than 50 requests totaling $129 million were received statewide. Only $25 million was available for disbursement.

The LPA award will be used in road construction, includes full depth asphalt pavement replacement, new sidewalks, plus curbs, gutters and a new storm sewer system.

Roachdale has agreed to pay for 20 percent of the total project cost.

In other business:

* Town Marshal Mike MaHoy reminded people that it is time for dog tag renewals. He also told the council that they are planning to start working on replacing faded stop signs.

* Town Superintendent Ted Knowling reported they successfully flushed out whatever was stuck in the storm sewer at Walnut and Railroad. He also gave the council a quote for a new cable locator "just like the one they already have." Cost for the equipment is $2,375.

* Town employees Greg Poole, Bill Hubble and Knowling discussed a problem with a small storage building that is on top of a storm sewer needing repairs. They requested help in asking the property owner to move the unit so work could continue on the storm sewer.
