Preservation society to host regional meeting

The Board of Directors of the Heritage Preservation Society (HPS) approved a motion Wednesday to host the Western Regional meeting of the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana this summer.

The group will be making recommendations to the Foundation for historic sites in Greencastle to hold a progressive dinner.

"We haven't had it here in Greencastle for over a decade," said Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana Director Tommy Kleckner. "The last one here was in a hall at DePauw University."

The event has generally been a progressive affair with appetizers being served at one location, dinner at a different spot and desert at a third. Generally the group tries to have each site be a historic location.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase the community and some of the great landmarks here," added Kleckner.

Cost for the evening is $25 per person for members of Historic Landmarks or the Heritage Preservation Society. A special membership/dinner offer is available to persons wishing to become members and to attend the dinner for $40.

Membership applications to the Heritage Preservation Society are available at the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Putnam County Foundation, Putnam County Museum and Putnam County Visitor and Convention Center. Cost to join the HPS is $25.

Membership in the HPS now exceeds 100 individuals, businesses and organizations. The group raises public awareness of the importance of preservation and the continued expansion and care of the Heritage Wall.

One of their more recent projects was the relocation of an 1850s log cabin nestled in the wooded hills of southeastern Putnam County to the Cloverdale Town Park.
