More than 25 volunteers were recognized at the Putnam County Habitat for Humanity annual meeting recently.

Habitat -- through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials -- builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowners. The houses are sold at no profit and financed with affordable loans.

"We do this because of the love we have for the community," said board member Tammy Folck. She noted that none of the office staff are paid for their work. It is strictly a volunteer organization.

During the recent brunch, volunteers were given certificates, coupons and hammers in thanks for all the support they provided last year.

Marj Weaver was named Volunteer of the Year at the event.

Mill Pond Health Campus provided their famous biscuits and gravy for the event. The following organizations and people made other donations to Habitat for Humanity: Sears, Target, CVS, Wal-mart, Indianapolis Colts, Roachdale Hardware, Roachdale Building, Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa Murphy's, Greencastle Music, Goodies, Mill Pond, Putnam Inn, Summerfield Health Care, Kroger, Country Market, McCloud Electric, IAC, Headley Hardware, McDonalds, Burger King, Bright Future's, Treasures on the Square, North Salem Bank, Prairie Farms, DePauw University, Dixie Chopper, Con Agra Food, Whitaker Funeral Home, Big R, Random House, National Guard Armory, U.S. Army, Darrell Brouhard, Amber Hill, Ron Price, Barb Hill, Tammy Folck, Cloverdale Florist, Value Market, GFS and the House of Hope.

Annika Weaver enjoyed brunch during the Putnam County Habitat for Humanity annual meeting last weekend.

Habitat for Humanity built a new home and rehabilitated two others in 2008. They also sponsored Lunch with Santa, where every child attending received a gift. Habitat also has several fundraisers throughout the year including yard sales and an auction.

They are currently looking for applicants for a home in Roachdale that will be ready this year. Interested families can contact the Habitat office at 653-5360.

Today, Habitat for Humanity International has built more than 300,000 houses, sheltering more than 1.5 million people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide.

Putnam County Habitat for Humanity Inc. is located at 620 Tennessee St., Greencastle. For volunteer information call 653-5360.
