Seminar slated at Union Chapel

Friday, March 13, 2009

Union Chapel Church is offering a seminar for parents of children of all ages who would like to begin planning for college.

The seminar will be held at 7 p.m. on March 18. The church is located on U.S. 36 one mile west of Morton.

Becky Brothers, guidance counselor at South Putnam High School, will explain how to go about getting scholarships.

"She knows what to tell kids to do," said Lou Fordice, a parent with first-hand experience in seeking college financial aid. "Ms. Brothers knows the contacts that need to be made."

Fordice said colleges are looking for hard workers in school and also in the community. Attendance is also important.

Randy Tarter, a financial planner for Teacher's Credit Union, will also be at the seminar to offer advice on paying for tuition, books and room and board.

"It's never too late to begin saving for college, even if you only have a year or 10 years before your child goes," Tarter said.

Since 2007, Indiana has offered a front end tax credit for beginning a college savings 529 plan.
