Ag Week kicks off with breakfast
There was a chill in the air and it was still dark outside, but that didn't stop a large crowd from heading into the community building at the Putnam County Fairgrounds Tuesday morning for the Ag Week breakfast.
Hotcakes and sausages, awards, presentations, two-day old baby chicks and smiling people greeting each other were the order of the day at the annual breakfast that kicks off a week-long celebration.
Mike and Sandy Rissler and their family were named Farm Family of the Year, and Dave Greenburg was presented with the Friend of the Farmer Award.
FFA students from North Putnam, South Putnam and Cloverdale talked about their clubs and activities during the past year.
Tammy Amor, executive director of the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce presented awards for the top three winners of the Ag Day photo contest. First place winner was Sharon Masters, Greencastle. Her photo was titled "Bottle Feeding Baby Goat."
Second place winner was Marvetta Darlene Bee, Greencastle for her "Autumn on the Farm." Alana Sutherlin, Greencastle placed third with her "Dirty Piggies."
Also addressing the crowd was new county 4-H extension educator Mark Evans. He spoke about 4-H and its impact on kids. He even called on a few people in the audience to discuss what being in 4-H meant to them.
Besides the breakfast, there is a Putnam County Field Day, the Rotary and Kiwanis "Ask a Farmer" to lunch as well as the annual Mini-Farm Fest planned.
The breakfast is the first event leading up to National Agricultural Day, which is celebrated every year on the first day of spring. It honors agriculture for providing safe, abundant and affordable products, a strong economy and sources of renewable energy and job opportunities.
