Eagles, Tiger Cubs reach finals

The South Putnam eighth grade girls defeated Cloverdale 47-27 Tuesday night in the first round of the Junior High Basketball County Tourney.

Two players scoring in double figures led the Eagles. Leanna Masters led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Mattie Varvel with 10. Nikki York scored five points, with Jenna Jones, Mallory Cash and Kelsey Whitaker adding four each. Caitlyn Boyce and Brittany Birt chipped in two points each and Brenly Bratcher added one.

Tiger Cubs win

The GMS seventh grade girls advanced to the finals with a victory over North Putnam 33-22.

The Lady Tigers overcame severe foul trouble in the first half, as the Cougars attempted 19 free throws. The Tiger Cubs still managed to lead by four at the break.

GMS used a balanced scoring attack and a strong second half defense to prevail.

Alex Basile scored eight points, with Shelby Earl and Corrine Trigg adding seven each. Danielle Thomas chipped in six and Shelby Bonebrake and Miranda Nuz scored two points each for GMS.

Maddi Asbell and Bethany Wiatt paced North Putnam with 11 and 10, respectively.

GMS will face host South Putnam for the Putnam County Championship on Thursday, with a 6 p.m. start.
