Final defendant in assault sentenced

Saturday, March 21, 2009

The last of four co-defendants charged in a June assault that left a Greencastle man severely injured has been sentenced for his role in the attack.

Jared L. Hornaday, 19, pled guilty to a Class C felony charge of battery. Putnam County Circuit Court Judge Matthew Headley gave Hornaday a four-year sentenced with 18 months executed. Hornaday will serve 90 days at the Putnam County Jail and the remainder of his executed time on Community Corrections.

According to court documents, Hornanday and three other men took part in an assault on John Sanders, 26, outside Old Topper's Bar in Greencastle on June 5.

Court documents said Sanders suffered "what appeared to be a brain bleed," as well as "extensive cuts and bruising which would likely require reconstructive plastic surgery."

Also convicted for their parts in the attack on Sanders were

* Cody McNew, 20, who was sentenced on Feb. 19 to five years with two years executed in the Indiana Department of Corrections with the remainder of his sentence spent on probation.

* Frank Adam Roche, 19, who was sentenced on Feb. 19 to seven years with two years executed in the Indiana Department of Corrections with the remainder of his sentence spent on probation.

* Jeremy Musall, 24, who was sentenced on Dec. 8 to six years in the Indiana Department of Corrections with two years executed, one year on home detention and three years on probation.

A narrative of the case prepared by Putnam County Prosecutor's Office investigator Charles Bollinger said Hornaday kicked Sanders in the face after Sanders had been struck by Musall and knocked to the ground by McNew.

  • It takes four guys to beat down one. Does that classify as manly these days? That's about pathetic.
