Judy George shows off one of the many displays for the Red Rover, Red Rover, Send Everyone Over exhibit at the Putnam County Museum. The new exhibit opens Saturday at 10 a.m. An 1890s rocking horse and Irish Mail bicycle are featured.

The Putnam County Museum's newest exhibit promises to bring out the kid in you. Called Red Rover, Red Rover, Send Everyone Over, the exhibit contains a representative sample of how children have played over the last century.

It will premiere on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Museum and will run through the end of July.

Over 40 local contributors have loaned items for the exhibit at the museum. These include an 1890s rocking horse, 1940s Teddy bear and very unique Irish Mail bicycle.

A doll collection, original Mickey Mouse, computer game display, old board games and sample collection from youth sport leagues will be available for viewing.

There are also old bikes and wagons, World War I metal toys as well as contemporary children's books on display.

Magician Van-ish will be performing at 10:30 a.m. He is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and will be performing a wide array of tricks. Admission is free.

Committee members who put the Red Rover exhibit together include Chairman Judy George, Mariette Bargin, Marilyn Lawrence, Cortina Ison, Linda Raines, Dorothy Brown, Shirley Steward, Vicky Kricher, S. Green, Terry Ross, David English, Joe Condon and Mark McKee.

A replica of the Sutherlin Round Barn, a piece of Putnam County history that is no longer standing, will also greet visitors when they enter the museum.

John and Rea Sutherlin Zeiner made construction of the barn possible. Rea remembers playing in the barn as a child, as does son David. It will open on Saturday at the same time as the Red Rover exhibit.

The Putnam County Museum is located at 1105 N. Jackson Street, Greencastle. For information about the exhibit call the museum at 653-8419 or email museum2@co.putnam.in.us

  • The story of Red Rover caught my eye and the picture has an Irish Male which looks like the same one my Dad made me when I lived at 615 Walnut St. in Greencastle. I have never been able to find another one like it and I wonder if it is the one he made. My sister and I are the daughters of Harvey and Melba Owens. Dad was a mail carrier for 37 years there. I would very much like to know about the Irish Male (or Mail) which is on the bottom shelf in the picture. I'm also glad the old Sutherlin Round Barn has been renovated and in good use. Thank you.
