Genevieve Pickett, 86, of Indianapolis passed away Sunday, April 5, 2009.

She was born in Medora on July 13, 1922 to the late Thomas and Jessie (Zollman) Newkirk.

In 1943 she graduated from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse and on Nov. 24, 1943 she married Dr. Robert D. Pickett.

Genevieve worked as a private duty nurse at Methodist Hospital before retiring to become a loving mother and homemaker. She later volunteered at Methodist and IU Medical Center as a patient representative.

She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and the Women's Association of the Marion County Medical Auxiliary.

Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, Dr. Robert D. Pickett; two children, Stephen D. Pickett (Kimberlin K.) of Indianapolis and Nancy Ann Pickett of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren, Laura A. Pickett of Fishers, Christopher D. Pickett (Brenda) of Indianapolis, Tyler P. Lowman (Kari) of San Diego, Ian M. Bushong of San Jose, Calif. and Justin Burger of San Diego; five great grandchildren, Trent and Sydney Schlafer, Elizabeth Pickett, Brooke Lowman and Gage Coffelt; two brothers, Harold D. Newkirk of Franklin and Thomas W. Newkirk of Medora; and one sister, Dorothy J. Esbenshade of Peoria, Ariz.

Family and friends will gather from noon until 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the parlor at St. Luke's United Methodist Church followed by a service to celebrate Genevieve's life in the Robertson Chapel at the church.

A private interment will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel 740 E. 86th Street.
