Donald L. Monnett, 80, Greencastle, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at St. Vincent's Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born March 18, 1929 in Greencastle, he was the son of Clifford H. and Dorothy B. (Stewart) Monnett.

He was a United States Army veteran having served during the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. He married Barbara L. "Bobby" (Bryan) on Dec. 27, 1953 and she survives.

Mr. Monnett had been a truck driver in the trucking business from 1955 to 1987 and served as superintendent of the Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle from 1987 until his retirement in 1994.

A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1550; American Legion Post 58; and the Temple Masonic Lodge 47, F & AM, all of Greencastle; and an inactive membership at the Greencastle Elks Lodge 1077.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kathy L. Jones of Greencastle; a son, Matthew D. Monnett of Avon; four sisters, Mildred L. Edwards of Indianapolis, Marcia S. Campbell and husband, Jerry of Muncie, Patricia K. Smith of Indianapolis, Janice A. Inman of Greencastle; three brothers, Gordon L. "Bud" Monnett and wife, Ann of Indianapolis, Jerry G. Monnett and wife, Beverly of Greencastle, and Keith A. Monnett of Greencastle; two grandchildren, Jacob Jones of Plainfield and Cody Jones of Terre Haute.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry D. Monnett; and brother, Bill Monnett.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Bowen officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday.
