St. Andrews welcomes Cathedral Choir

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

At 4 p.m. on Sunday, the Christ Church Cathedral (Indianapolis) Choir of Men and Boys, under the direction of Dr. Frederick Burgomaster, organist and choir master, will present a service of choral evensong for the third Sunday of Easter and a concert of sacred works at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Greencastle.

The traditional Anglican service incorporates the reading of scripture, the chanting of psalms and prayers and the singing of anthems and hymns as provided for in the Book of Common Prayer. It is being offered in memory of Arthur Carkeek, longtime organist of St. Andrew's and DePauw University professor of music.

A supper will be served following the service and concert in the Hamilton Fellowship Hall.

Formed in 1883, the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys has achieved an international reputation for choral excellence.

In addition to performing with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the choir has sung numerous commissioned works and has frequently appeared on radio and television broadcasts. The choir has toured Great Britain and Europe, singing in London (St. Paul's and Westminster Abbey), Canterbury, Paris (Notre Dame), Chartres, Munich, Berlin, Leipzig (St. Thomas), Venice (St. Mark's) and Rome (St. Peter's Basilica).

They have also released several recordings, including excerpts from Messiah, released in 2005 by Four Winds Entertainment.

Each Sunday throughout the year, the choir sings for the cathedral's 11 a.m. service and, from September through May, at Thursday Evensongs. Sunday services are broadcast on WICR 88.7 FM at 5 p.m. the same day, and the weekly evensong services are broadcast Fridays at 6 p.m.

Frederick Burgomaster is organist and choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis and conductor and director of the Indianapolis Festival Chorus and Orchestra.

Prior to his tenure at Christ Church Cathedral, he served as conductor and music director of the Buffalo (N.Y.) Symphony Chorus (the Buffalo Schola Cantorum), working with conductors Lukas Foss, Michael Tilson Thomas, Christopher Keene and Sergiu Commissiona.

Burgomaster will be assisted by David Sinden, assistant cathedral organist.

The people of St. Andrew's look forward to welcoming all to the church for this festive occasion.
