Tiger Cubs can't catch Sparkplugs, fall 3-2

The Greencastle girls' tennis team came up short against Speedway, losing 3-2 Monday.

After capturing the first set 6-4, GHS No. 1 singles player Katie Collins scored the win when Alya Heffern forfeited the match. At No. 2 singles, Kate Babington fell in straight sets 0-6, 0-6, while Katie Farris went down 2-6 and 1-6 in No. 3 singles action.

Emalie McClain and Bridget Tucker teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles match over Anriene Runge and Becca Cota 8-6 (7-6) and 7-5.

In junior varsity action, the Tiger Cubs won 4-2 over the Sparkplugs.

The doubles teams of Brooke Buckner and Kara Birt, Ashley Holmes and Nicole Boyce, Katrina Woody and Lucy Wilson and Alison Howard and Bethany Wathen all picked up wins.

On Friday, Greencastle defeated South Vermillion 5-0.

Collins, Babington and Farris picked up singles wins. The duo of Hilary Schroeder and Lauren Kenney defeated Brittany VanBuskirk in straight sets 6-1 and 6-4. Tucker and McClain picked up the win against Erin Holbert and Jessica Gohman 6-3 and 6-0.

Greencastle dominated the junior varsity match. Brittany Elliott and Katie Kean scored singles wins, while three doubles teams getting wins.
