Clovers dominate first home meet

Cloverdale's James Hinton launches off the runway in the long jump event Tuesday at Cloverdale.

CLOVERDALE -- At the beginning of the season, there were three Clovers who were the talk of the team: Brooke Gray, James Hinton and Elizabeth Cheatham.

They still are.

Cloverdale won both meets. The boys won with a score of 83 points while North Central finished second with 57. Baptist finished third with 15 points. The girls won with 72 points while North Central finished second wih 60 and Baptist came in third with two points..

Hinton dominated the boys' meet, winning the long jump, the high jump and the 300 meter high hurdles.

"We're Lucky to have James this year," CHS Coach Kristen Crabtree said. "He works hard at practice and has a natural athletic ability."

Hinton crushed the competition in the long jump, leaping 20-feet-2-inches for the win, beating the second place jumper by nearly 4 feet. Then in 300 hurdles, he ran a 42.53, almost seven seconds ahead of the second place. In the high jump he didn't jump until six-feet with the only height that was cleared prior was 5-feet-4-inches. He cleared six-foot for the win and tried to clear 6-feet-5-inches for a school record, but couldn't pull it off.

"So far we're impressed with what James has done this year," Crabtree said.

Jaquan Moore was the other multi-event winner for the boys' team. He won the shot put with a toss of 40-feet and the discus, throwing 122-feet-4-inches.

On the girls' team, Cheatham proved once again why she is one of the dominate throwers in the county.

She threw 36-feet-3-inches for first place in the shot put and then threw 86-feet-8.5-inches in the discus.

"Elizabeth has really impressed us this season," Crabtree said. "Every meet she is either throwing a personal best or setting a school record. Over the weekend she set the school record in the discus and now owns that record and the shot put record. She has just been impressive this year."

The other Lady Clover who has caught Crabtree's attention in Gray. She has dominated the 100 hurdles event this season and won another race Tuesday when she finished with a time of 17.03.

"Brooke has just impressed us this year," Crabtree said. "And she is only a freshman, so we will be looking her to do something in the next few years."

Cloverdale is back in action on Thursday when it travels to Cascade for a 4:30 p.m. meet.
