GCSC appeals incorrect rates

The Greencastle School Board hosted a special public meeting on Thursday that should avert a huge headache for the school system.

In a legal advertisement published last week, the tax rates for the school system were incorrect. Because the rates were too low, the school corporation would have stood to lose an estimated $1.9 million in tax draws, according the Superintendent Robert Green.

However, Green and Treasurer Nancy Marlow discovered the discrepancy and contacted the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance on Monday.

"There was a lot of discussion about how best to solve this. They recommended that we get the board together for a special meeting and get this published," Green said.

The board approved a resolution to appeal to the Tax Adjustment Board to get the problem corrected.

If approved, the appeal will lead to a re-publishing of the correct tax rates in the Banner Graphic.

Green went on to say he believed this problem would not delay the tax draws for the corporation since tax bills have not been mailed.

However, he did say potential disaster has likely been diverted.

"It could have been catastrophic," Green said.

The superintendent also told the board he has notified the other superintendents in the county, and their published rates were correct.
