South Putnam students honored as state champions
It's been said a thousand times before, but it's true -- hard work pays off. Some South Putnam High School students learned that important lesson recently.
Members of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America were named state champions in March at the state conference in Indianapolis. Their project on teenage eating disorders earned them the win.
Now the group is taking the presentation -- poster, Power Point, T-shirt, pamphlets, pencils and all -- to the National FCCLA Conference for one week in Nashville, Tenn.
Before they head for Nashville, two of the freshmen members Sarah Cheatham and Emma Young have taken the presentation on the road to Greencastle High School, where the presentation was given to three of GHS classes Monday.
Through a topic that affects their peers, the girls have become passionate about the message. The goal was to present it to each county school with the idea it could benefit all students, but only GHS responded to the request.
However, the group's hard work isn't quite over yet. They still need to raise a substantial amount of money to attend the conference.
So far, the group has worked the concession stand during track and baseball games at SPHS; gone to Plainfield and worked at Chick-Fil-A to earn 20 percent of any order made by someone supporting FCCLA; sold McDonalds coupon books; and the first of three car washes was held May 9 at Auto Zone.
For future fundraisers, the group will be at Chicago's Pizza, 1004 Main St., Cloverdale, from 4 to 8 p.m. May 26 earning a percentage of the sales; and the last two car washes are scheduled for June 20 and June 27 at Auto Zone, 911 Indianapolis Road.
This will be the first time in several years South Putnam High School has had representation at the National FCCLA Convention. In addition, SPHS is the only school in the county with FCCLA members heading to Nashville.
