CHS grad named Woodrow Fellow

CLOVERDALE -- A 2004 Cloverdale High School graduate was accepted into the inaugural class of Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

Heather Crego is one of 59 new fellows to begin work this summer on master's degrees to prepare for math and science teaching positions in the state's high-need urban and rural schools.

Each fellow receives a $30,000 stipend to complete a master's program at one of four selected Indiana universities. Crego has chosen to earn her degree at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. The 2008 Franklin College grad earned a bachelor's degree in biology.

Crego is described as a dean's list student with experience as a medical intern. She is involved with Habitat for Humanity and G-Pact, which is a program in association with Big Brothers, Big Sisters. She is the former co-captain of the Franklin dance team.

Being in a high-need urban and rural school will be a very different environment, admitted Crego.

The entire program got an endorsement from the state's highest authority, though.

"Indiana's students are not learning nearly enough math and science to succeed in this world," said Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. "They need to be taught by people with true mastery of the subject matter, and in the Woodrow Wilson Fellows our kids will have America's best math and science teachers."
