Clovers fall to Artesians

MARTINSVILLE -- The Cloverdale boys' golf team fell to Martinsville 157-192 Thursday on the road.

Chris Arnold led the way with a 44, followed by Keith Hathorn with a 47 and Mike Wellington added a 49. Gary Williams shot a 52, Ryan Book a 57 and Sam Jordan carded a 59.

Cloverdale head coach Doug Wokoun explained that the team's inexperience didn't do them any favors on Thursday.

"Foxcliff is a tight course and requires position golf," he said. "We are not experienced enough yet to manage that situation well. We had some good golf shots but did not convert them into good holes or scores.

"We have to take this as a learning experience and build from what took place," Wokoun added.

With sectional looming ever closer, Wokoun voiced his concern about his team's production right now. He commented that the team hit the ball well and that they have the time to make the adjustments they need to make.

"It is disappointing to see our scores going in this direction," Wokoun commented. "Watching certain parts of the round might make one believe we were playing very well, but seeing the scores leads to a different conclusion. We have some time to regroup and work to improve, and we need to take advantage of that."
