The South Putnam baseball team defeated Clay City 12-5 Tuesday, moving to 18-7 on the season.

Josh Flory and Noah Boswell were a combined 3-for-6 with three home runs.

"We had three home runs by our seniors, so it was a nice way for them to close it out on senior night," South Putnam head coach Troy Burgess said.

Also coming up big for South Putnam were Derek Dean going 3-for-4, Robbie Gibson 2-for-3 and Brayden Freeman was 2-for-4.

Grant Zimmerman got the win, going five-and-two-thirds inning with four strikeouts and six hits. Flory relieved Zimmerman. With the win, Zimmerman moved to 7-0 on the season.

The Eagles will tangle with Covenant Christian today at 5 p.m. at the Class 2A No. 46 Speedway Sectional. It's a crapshoot when a team competes the night before a big game, but Burgess feels like the gamble paid off.

"It's one of those things where you're not sure if it's good or bad to play the night before sectional," Burgess commented. "I guess it's bad if you don't play well, but if you play like we did tonight, it's good. It kind of gets you tuned up."

The 18 wins for South Putnam ties a school record.
