Tiger Cubs, Cougars, Eagles end season at regional
LAFAYETTE -- For some, Thursday was the end of the season, but for many it was the end of a career.
Out of the 11 boys that competed, only three will have another chance for a state title next year. The other eight will move on to either compete in college or look back on the memories of their high school career.
One group that can truly look back onto the 2009 season smile is the North Putnam 400 relay team. All season they kept accomplishing things either a new school record, a better split time or a better hand off. They always did something new and Thursday was no different.
"Those were the best hand offs we had all season long," NPHS Coach Jim Spencer said. "That was one of our better times of the season as well considering the 20 degree drop in the temperature we had.
"We have done really well this season. We broke and re-broke the school record a few times this year and Jerrett has had a good season this year," Spencer said. "This has been a really good year for us,s now we just have to build on it and see what we can do next year."
The Cougars relay team, which consisted of Jerrett Ban, Paul Enders, Kolten Everts and Jeremy Minor were all seniors except for Everts, finished seventh overall with a time of 44.36. Even though they didn't win, they were happy that they made it as far as they did.
"I'm just thrilled that we made it this far," Ban said about his teammates. "I'm really proud of these guys."
Ban and other seniors agreed on one thing, Everts the freshman on the relay team deserved credit for what he has done this year.
"You have to give it up for the freshman," the senior group said. "He did great this year."
Ban also took a shot at going to the state meet in another event, the 100 meter dash. He made it into the finals, but finished seventh with a time of 11.36.
"My goal today was to make it into the finals, so I hit my goal," Ban said.
Greencastle had its fair share of seniors say goodbye Thursday as well. Greg Lilly, Jordan Lewis, Kyle Harlan, Ben Wilson and Ashton Marshall said bid farewell to their high school track careers yesterday.
Lilly finished 14th in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.68, while Wilson finished ninth in the 800 meter run with a 2:01.97, just missing a personal best time. Wilson's best time of the 2009 season was 2:01.35 and he ran that just one week ago at the Plainfield sectional.
Marshall finished 13th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.53, while Lewis and Harlan was on the 3,200 relay team with Cameron Cash and Ryan Gillespie that finished 11th with a time of 8:35.61.
The closest person that Greencastle had to getting out of the regional and make the trip down to Bloomington was Jordan Hickam. He finished fifth in the long jump, jumping 21-feet-9-inches.
"I've been pretty confident in what I've done this year and I've had a lot of success this season," Hickam said. "Yes, there was some tough competition here today, but I thrive off of these kinds of meets and use the other team's guys to push me to do the best that I can.
"I was just hoping to make it out of this meet," Hickam added.
Even though he didn't advance anyone to the state competition like he has done in years past, GHS coach Mike Schimpf was proud of the way his guys competed.
"This was a successful season, but you always hope to go one more week," Schimpf said. "We came up against tough competition and the guys did well. They came up and practiced well this week and we had a lot of seniors here today and they will be missed. They were good leaders and good people.
"We were just maxed out and that's OK. I'm very proud of what they did and we were successful and had a lot of fun doing," Schimpf added. "You can't ask for much more than that."
For South Putnam, this was the end of the Adam Masters' season, but not his career. Masters, who is a junior this season, finished 11th in the discus with a disappointing throw of 131-feet-11-inches. Last week in the sectional, he threw 146-feet-6-inches.
"He's disappointed in today's throw, but he has had a really good year," SPHS coach Carl Coons said about his thrower. "This is his first time up here and the idea of him coming up here and getting this experience is beneficial to him.
"Right now he is really disappointed, but hopefully this experience helps him for next year," Coons said.
