GHS Alumni Association recognizes two special people

John and Carolyn Carson were recognized at the Greencastle High School all-class reunion Saturday by Jinsie Bingham with a certificate of honorary lifetime memberhip to the association and a clock.

Greencastle High School alumni gathered for an all-class reunion dinner Saturday and gave special recognition to two extraordinary people.

John and Carolyn (Flint) Carson will be leaving the Greencastle area for Utah, where their daughters Susan, Nancy and Sarah and grandchildren reside.

"We will be leaving sometime after August," said Carolyn.

The couple is 1957 graduates of GHS and charter members of the Alumni Association. Carolyn is the creator of the Tiger Tales newsletter, which provides news from each class year.

John chaired the undedication ceremony of the old downtown gym, where the Tiger Cubs played its last, memorable game in 1988 against Riverton Park.

Jinsie Bingham, who is also a charter member of the alumni association, gave a speech in honor of the Carsons. She noted all the couple has done for Greencastle and the Putnam County community.

"There is no way we can find the words to thank the Carsons for their faithful dedication to this organization," Bingham said in her speech.

To end her nearly tearful speech, Bingham presented John and Carolyn with a certificate recognizing them as lifetime honorary members of the GHS Alumni Association. In addition, they were given a clock.

"This clock is to help you remember it is always time to cheer for the Tiger Cubs," said Bingham.

Before the honorary presentation, Bob Harbison spoke to the crowd.

Harbison came to Greencastle in 1959 looking for work. He was hired by Greencastle schools as a teacher and later became principal. In between, he was a coach and athletic director.

"There were 2,100 kids I cared about," he said about being principal.

In his speech, Harbison shared some things he has learned in his lifetime -- be on time and put in the time.

Among the crowd were Forst Fuller and Lindsey (Rowling) Fenwick. The two represented the oldest and youngest alumni in attendance. Fuller is a 1934 graduate, while Fenwick graduated from GHS in 2005.

Also during the reunion program, a scholarship update was given by David Boswell. There have been more than 60 scholarships awarded to GHS graduates and $6,500 in matches has been raised for the GHS Alumni Scholarship Fund.
