Volunteers make this a special city

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

To the Editor:

This is a very special place to live.

I was reminded once again this past Saturday when we saw almost one hundred people representing the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Greencastle Rotary, Res-Care, Wal-Mart and other interested citizens give up their Saturday morning to give back to this community.

Trash was collected along our main thoroughfares and in our neighborhoods by people who just wanted to help. (RHS volunteered pick-up at the end of our shifts.) West Central Solid Waste District organized another successful Tox-a-Way day that was aided by many hours of directing and lifting provided by the Greencastle Civic League members.

For those that were able, there were even stops down on the Square for the opening of this year's Farmer's Market. It was a great morning of neighbors meeting neighbors while they browsed ate and purchased locally grown and made goods. (The market will continue every Saturday from 8a.m.-noon until the end of October.)

On this Saturday at the end of May we saw the best of a small city, and just another example of why it's good to call Greencastle home.
