DPU faculty members to perform at Gobin

Members of the DePauw School of Music voice faculty will be the featured artists in the fourth concert of the 2009 Greencastle Summer Classical Music Festival tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

DePauw faculty pianists John Clodfelter and Amanda Hopson will be accompanying, and faculty members Nicole Brockmann, viola, and Eric Edberg, cello, will perform as well.

Admission is free, with donations accepted. This week's concert is sponsored by Neal Abraham and Donna Wiley, honoring the memory of chemist and pianist Percy Lavon Julian.

The concert comes midweek in this summer's Vocal Arts at DePauw, a week-long camp for outstanding high school vocalists who come from around the country for intensive study with DePauw faculty.

"This week is the only time this summer we have so many of our voice faculty on campus at the same time," said the festival's artistic director Eric Edberg. "So I had the idea to invite all of them to perform. And we are very fortunate that they agreed. It's going to be a varied and fun program."

Soprano Pamela Coburn, the James B. Stewart Distinguished Professor of Music, will perform the first movement of Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 by Heitor Villa Lobos. Barbara Paré will perform works by Strauss and Marx.

Caroline Smith, recently named the Cassel Grubb University Professor of Music, will sing music by Jake Heggie and Jerome Kern. Countertenor Jay White will be joined by Craig Resta, vielle, in the 12th century French song, "Bele doette."

The Greencastle Summer Classical Music Festival presents concerts every Wednesday evening throughout the summer.

Next week, cellist Yun Ji Yeon and pianist Nariaki Sugiura will perform a recital featuring Spanish and South American works.
