Local residents have chance to 'Dine with a Doc'
A small crowd dined with Dr. Troy Quiz, an internal medicine specialist, during the first Putnam County Dine with a Doc event at Hickory Creek at Sunset.
However, Quiz was not the only special guest. State Representative Nancy Michael was in attendance to show her support and participate in Dine with a Doc.
The event welcomes local seniors to hear an educational topic, while enjoying a complementary lunch. On Monday, Quiz informed the group on diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and how the three are connected.
He talked about the two main types of diabetes, which he called a "progressive disease."
"It affects every organ in the body (including the heart)," Quiz commented.
According to the American Heart Association, about one in three U.S. adults have high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms, nearly one-third of these people do not know they have it.
Quiz told the crowd uncontrolled high blood pressure could lead to a stroke, heart attack or kidney failure. Quiz said he tells his patients to know the facts about high blood pressure and follow proper monitoring by the doctor and make simple lifestyle changes.
In addition to high blood pressure, high cholesterol can cause heart failure. There are three types of cholesterol -- good, bad and triglycerides.
"If your triglyceride count is too high, the good and bad cholesterol doesn't matter," Quiz said.
There are two types of risk factors for high cholesterol. The first factors are things people can do something about such as eating healthier.
The second set of risk factors for high cholesterol include things a person can't do anything about such as family history, age and gender.
"If you are male and over the age of 45, you are at greater risk for high cholesterol," Quiz noted.
After his helpful information sprinkled with humor, the crowd had a well-rounded meal. Quiz, who has lived in the Greencastle area with his family for 10 years, is the medical director at Hickory Creek and on staff at Putnam County Hospital. His office is located at 305 Medic Way.
Before eating, the group could have their blood pressure taken and be provided pulse oximetry information by Amedisys Home Health Care.
The Dine with a Doc will take place the fourth Monday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon at Hickory Creek at Sunset, 1109 S. Indiana St. It is free and open to the public. Membership is not required. There will be a different doctor to dine with at each event.
