ROACHDALE -- Two people were trapped in their mini-van following a single vehicle crash Tuesday morning east of Roachdale.

The driver of the van, Robert Hill, 63, called the 911-dispatch center at 9:23 a.m. to report the crash. Hill, who is physically handicapped, could not get himself out of the van, and his passenger, 72-year-old Dorothy Lyons was unconscious.

Putnam County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Helmer said Lyons was just beginning to regain consciousness when he arrived at the accident site.

Lyons was transported by ambulance to Hendricks Regional Health, Danville, with serious injuries.

Amy Ketterer with Hendricks Regional said Lyons was transferred to a Clarion Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of her injuries. Her condition was listed as stable, but serious as of Tuesday afternoon.

Hill was also transported to Hendricks Regional by ambulance, where he was listed in good condition.

Hill admitted he was traveling too fast down CR 775E, when he attempted to make a curve. He lost control of the van and slid in the gravel on the road before striking a utility pole on the driver's side. At the time of the accident, Lyons was seated in the back seat just behind Hill.

Kenny's Wrecker Service towed the vehicle from the scene.
