Foundation names three new directors

At the 2008 Putnam County Community Foundation annual meeting held at the DePauw University Student Union Building on June 24, members of the foundation elected three new directors for the organization. These members of the board are Eleanor "Ellie" Ypma, Karen Nelson Heavin and Mark Legan.

Ypma

Ypma resides in Greencastle and is a graduate of Purdue University, obtaining a B.S. in psychology and speech, an M.S. in counseling and guidance and recreation leadership and education, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration, psychological measurement and history.

Her professional experience includes various positions at DePauw University from 1971 to 2004 including Registrar and Associate Vice President with a rank of professor. While working, she was active in professional organizations, serving as President of Indiana Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers, member of the American Council in Education's National Identification Program for the Advancement of Women in Higher Education State Planning Committee (ACE-INIP), and national executive officer of Kappa Delta Pi National Education Society.

Since retirement she volunteers in the After School Reading Program at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church and The Putnam County Museum. She serves on the Scholarship Committee of the Putnam County Community Foundation and continues to be active with the DePauw retirees group.

Heavin

Heavin is a graduate of South Putnam High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Franklin College.

Her professional experience varies from a traveling financial field consultant for International Dairy Queen to working as a fundraiser for an economic development corporation in Illinois. Currently, she serves Warren Township of Putnam County as the Township Trustee.

She is an active member of the Putnam County Friends of the Library Board, Mental Health of America Putnam County Board, South Putnam Central Elementary PTO Board, Putnam County Extension Homemakers, Return-A-Gift, and the Cloverdale United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Dr. Anthony Heavin, live on a cattle farm and raise their two young sons, Garrett and Brock.

Legan

Legan, along with his wife Phyllis and daughter Beth, resides in eastern Putnam County. A native of Johnson County, he holds both BS and MS degrees from Purdue University's College of Agriculture. Prior to establishing a 20-year career in farming, he spent seven years as an Agriculture Extension Agent in Jennings and Putnam counties.

Legan serves as President of Legan Livestock and Grain, Inc., a family-owned farm, producing 40,000 weaned pigs and about 1,000 acres of corn and soybeans annually. He has served as President of the Indiana Pork Producers, is currently on the National Pork Producers Council Board of Directors and is the agriculture representative on the IDEM Water Pollution Control Board.

He also serves as a Deacon and Treasurer of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Honors Legan has received include the Outstanding Young Pork Producer, Indiana Master Farmer Award and the Purdue Distinguished Agriculture Alumni.
