Post office to close early for holiday

Thursday, July 2, 2009

The retail counters of most central Indiana post offices, including those in Putnam County, will close at noon today to enable employees to spend more time with their families.

Noon will be the last collection for mail deposited in blue collection boxes that day. All collection points that have a regularly scheduled collection time prior to noon on Friday will be collected as scheduled.

Regular mail delivery for July 3 will be unaffected by the change. P.O. box mail access will only be available until noon in those post offices where retail counters and access to post office boxes are co-located and affected by early retail closing.

"As many businesses close early on July 3, the number of customers visiting our lobbies greatly diminishes," said Kim Yates, communications programs specialist. "We view this as an opportunity to afford retail employees more time with their families by closing retail operations in most of our locations early on July 3."

Several post offices throughout the state will stay open later than noon. They include Terre Haute (open until 5 p.m.), North Terre Haute (open until 5 p.m.), Terre Haute Rose Station (open until 4:30 p.m.) and Crawfordsville (open until 5 p.m.).

Commercial customers are asked to check with their bulk mail acceptance unit for July 3 hours of operation. Post office retail counters will be close on July 4, and there will be no mail delivery.

Post office retail counters will resume regularly schedule hours of operation on Monday, July 8.
