Brock earns beautification award

Homeowner Carrie Brock stands in front of her house with sons Benjamin and Samuel. Brock's house recently won a Beautification Award from Habitat for Humanity.

ROACHDALE -- Carrie Brock learned to garden from her mother. Her green thumb is very apparent from the lovely flower garden she has around her home in Roachdale.

Earlier this year, residents in Brock's neighborhood were presented with gardening tools and plants. Student volunteers from DePauw University came out and helped homeowners clean up and beautify their lawns.

Unknown to the homeowners, Habitat board members reviewed the homes a few weeks ago and awarded Brock with the award for beautification.

Brock added the marigolds and flowers from Habitat to her already growing iris, cone and flax flowers. She also has bee balm, spiderwort and lots of other plants growing in her yard.

She credits her green thumb to being around her mother.

"My mom taught me. I love flowers. Her gardens are way prettier than mine," said Brock.

The growing skill runs in the family, as her next-door neighbors, the Dillons, are related. They placed second in the contest.

"Their houses look like something in Better Homes and Gardens," said Habitat Board member Tammy Folck.

Brock intends to keep adding to her garden that already contains many perennials.

Both families will receive a certificate to Chuck E. Cheese for a family of four.
