Joseph N. Hazel

Joseph N. Hazel, 88, of Greencastle died on July 29, 2009.

He was the son of Joseph and Annie Hazel, and was preceded in death by his wife Lila.

A native of Portsmouth, Va., Mr. Hazel was a veteran, receiving a Bronze Star while serving in the U.S. Army infantry in Europe during World War II. After the war, he was employed in Portsmouth by the Seaboard Airline Railroad, the Naval Ammunition Depot at St. Julian's Creek, and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

In Portsmouth, he was a high priest in the Tidal Wave Masonic Lodge, a Boy Scout leader and a Little League coach. He was also a volunteer at the Greencastle Senior Center, delivering meals on wheels.

He is survived by a brother, Frank Hazel of Richmond, Va.; a son, Wade Hazel and wife Tavia of Greencastle; and grandchildren Alia, Emma and Alexander of Greencastle.

No services have been scheduled. Cremation has been chosen. Roselawn Funeral Home in Terre Haute assisted the family in making arrangements.
