Alice June McGaughey, 89, of rural Roachdale died on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 at the Putnam County Hospital following an extended illness. She had been a resident of Mill Pond Health Campus for four years. She called Mill Pond "home," as she greatly appreciated the wonderful people who cared for her there.

Mrs. McGaughey and her husband Robert S. McGaughey owned and operated a farm north of Fincastle for nearly 60 years. She became the right arm that he had lost during a machinery accident. She enjoyed gardening and living in the country with all that entailed, including raising cattle and other livestock, helping with the crops, singing and helping others in times of need.

She was active in the Fincastle Community Church and other local churches for many years as a song leader and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her children, Patsy Chamberlain of Jasper, Sandra Sue McGaughey of Greencastle, Sharon Pitcock of Greencastle, Judith Idle of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Stephen McGaughey of Roachdale; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Her parents, husband, sisters and a grandson preceded her in death.

Servies and Morgan Funeral Home in Roachdale is in charge of the arrangements. A graveside ceremony has been planned for the family at the Russellville Cemetery with Alan Small officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the organization of your choice.
