BAINBRIDGE -- Town Council members got some bad news about the South Washington Street project from Town Clerk Jason Hartman during their meeting last week.

Hartman received notification the grant application for reconstruction on S. Washington St. was denied. The Indiana Department of Transportation suggested the town make application to reclassify the street in order to score better during the application process.

The council agreed to have Hartman reclassify the street, but did not make a decision on whether to make an application for the project next year.

Council members also received a revised quote for the resurfacing of South Locust Street. The quote was about $12,000 higher than the original estimate.

Assistant Utility Superintendent Troy Elless pointed out the revised quote included curb on the entire length of the street and resurfacing the whole street. I also included widening the street from 16 to 20 feet.

Elless was asked to negotiate with the contractor to bring the price into the $27,000 range.

Council members also approved the first reading of an ordinance to allow the use of golf carts on public streets. It passed 3-0.

Marsha Burns and Susan Cope with the Park Board announced to the council there would be a Family Movie Night set for Aug. 29 in the park.

They also reported that the North Putnam Community School Corporation provided a park bench to be used at the basketball court.

Burns introduced Kenny Davis to the council as a contractor with a great deal of experience in moving dirt.

The Park Board wants to move forward in developing the park to accommodate baseball fields.

Burns explained that Davis might be a good source in helping to determine the costs of initiating the project. She also questioned the need to apply for a grant to assist with construction.

Hartman reminded Burns that the purpose of the $30,000 planning grant was so that upon completion, the Park Board could apply for a construction grant. Davis agreed to pursue a grant as well. Council members agreed they would like to see the project move forward.

A vacancy in the town employee position was discussed by council members. Former town employee Charlie Boller vacated the position earlier this month. Cope requested they table the issue of hiring a person.

The Bainbridge Town Council meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the town hall.
