Cougars succumb to Warriors

ROACHDALE -- Intimidated.

That is the only word that NPHS coach Jill Schreiber could say to describe her volleyball team Wednesday night.

"We were intimidated from the get go," Schreiber said. "The girls, walked in and said she didn't graduate, and from that point on we were lost."

The girl that the Cougars were referring to was Kim Smith, Covenant Christians 6-foot-2-inch middle hitter, a major thorn in the Cougars' side.

The Warriors won the match in three sets, 25-15, 25-8, 25-11, with Smith contributing eight kills, three blocks and nine aces.

"We lost it out there," Schreiber said. "We lost our rotation, we lost everything. We missed serves, I mean we were awful.

"We tucked our tails and that was it," Schreiber added.

The Cougars were only able to get two kills the whole night and that was in the third set by Megan Robinson. Nikki Hamilton and Paxton Stephenson had one point each while Carlye McGaughey chipped in two.

"We didn't get any hits. They gave us all of our points," Schreiber said. "Our girls need to learn to work together. I know there are a lot of sophomores on this team that have not played varsity before, but I mean, we are an athletic team.

"We really are an athletic team, we just struggle in the mental game part," Schreiber added.

North Putnam is now 0-2 and is back in action when it hosts the Early Bird tournament starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
