Tiger Cubs roll over Terre Haute South

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

GREENCASTLE -- In boy's varsity soccer action, the Terre Haute South Braves traveled to Dee Monnett field Tuesday and were thrashed by the host Tiger Cubs.

GHS got on the scoreboard early when Mitchell Ball hit a shot that deflected off the Braves keeper and into the goal with 33:04 to go in the first half.

The Braves possessed the ball well and forced the GHS back line to make several stops until a foul was called against the Tiger Cubs inside the penalty area at the 26:11 mark. Braves forward Nick Henderson stepped up and blasted the resulting free kick past GHS keeper Kyle Parker to tie the score at 1-1.

Both teams worked hard to gain an advantage, with the Braves appearing to gain the momentum. With 13:32 to play in the half, Greencastle was awarded a direct free kick outside the penalty area. Senior David Cath delivered a nice ball into the Braves penalty area and sophomore Sonney Basham was on the other end to head the ball into the net to put the Tiger Cubs ahead 2-1.

GHS became a bit more defensive for the balance of the half and the score remained 2-1 going into the break. The Braves had 10 shots on goal versus seven for the hosts in the first half.

The first half play was physical with the Braves Kollin Monahan and Allen Keegan receiving yellow cards. The battle continued into the second half with the Tiger Cubs gaining advantage in ball possession.

With 25:10 to play in the match, junior Cam Cash delivered a ball to David Cath on a run through the back line of the Braves. Cath finished on the play to put the Tiger Cubs ahead 3-1.

Just four minutes later junior Spencer Moore beat the Braves keeper Spencer Ooley-Viray and fired a shot into the open net to extend the lead to 4-1. Freshman Evan Smith recorded the assist on the play.

GHS had several other good looks in the half and out shot the Braves 8-2 in the period.

"Defensively, I felt like we really had another shutout. The penalty kick was unfortunate and our back line was tough all night. It was good to see the guys finish on goal tonight. Sometimes it takes a win like this, against a very talented opponent, to put some confidence in your attack," said GHS coach Dave Lilly.

In the JV match, the Tiger Cubs defeated the Braves as well.

GHS scored with 6:57 to play in the first half when Evan Smith fired a shot into the net on a Mitchell Robinson assist. The Braves tied the score in the second half, but Brandon Query netted a goal with 8:07 to play in the match to give GHS the win.

Cam Cash delivered the game-winning assist.
