GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle Park Board met at a special location Tuesday, as the board members got their first look at the new disc golf course at Big Walnut Sports Park.

After opening the meeting in the central shelter at the sports park, Park Director Rod Weinschenk took the board on a small tour of one of the nearby disc golf "holes."

Completion of the course and some nearby wildflower gardens represents the final phase of an Indiana Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Grant for the park.

Final InDNR inspection of the work will be at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 11.

Mayor Sue Murray was also on hand at Tuesday's meeting to announce more good news for Big Walnut. The Redevelopment Commission voted recently to fund a pair of double-faced signs to go at the entrances of the sports park.

The signs will help alleviate the trouble people, especially visitors from outside the city, finding the sports park from S.R. 240.

The Parks and Recreation Department is currently preparing to wrap up its summer activities and head into fall. Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day will be the last three days the Greencastle Aquatics Center will be open to humans.

However, Tuesday will be Soggy Doggy Day at the pool. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. The humane society, local veterinarians and pet product suppliers will also be on hand. Owners are also invited to bring their dogs dressed in their best bathing suits for the swim suit competition.

  • You bring your own frisbees. There are frisbees designed just for frisbee golf, but most people who play it for fun just bring a good ol' fashioned frisbee. No tee times, just play when you show up. I have played a few times in a park in Terre Haute, and it's really fun. Good to see one now in Greencastle and at South Putnam High School.
