Tiger Cubs rout Cougars, 7-0

ROACHDALE -- When Daved Lilly took his Tiger Cubs to Roachdale to take on the North Putnam Cougars in a WCC soccer match, he didn't just want his team to win the match -- he never wanted them to let up.

"This was kind of our Bogey tonight," Lilly said. "We always come in hoping t hold our opponent to zero and the level of play here is noticeable. We just have more talent than they do, but our big challenge tonight was to stay focused. We sometimes have a tendency to play at the level of our opponent and not the level we are capable of."

That doubt was put out of Lilly's head early in the first half of the match when David Cath fired a penalty kick past the Cougars Keeper with 30:53 left in the first half. Then 13 minutes later Greencastle scored again. This time Josh Bonebrake got the goal with help from Spencer Moore.

In the final 10 minutes of the half, the Tiger Cubs went on a scoring frenzy with Sonney Basham knocking in two goals and Jon Good getting one when his shot deflected off the Keeper B.J. Moore's gloves for the goal.

"The first half was pretty productive for us," Lilly said. "In the second half, we just tried to keep possession a little more. And I told the guys that I didn't care if we didn't score anymore goals. I just don't want them to score."

Greencastle added only two more goals to their score in the second half. One at the 25:28 mark courtesy of Cameron Cash and the other from Luke Smith with 3:05 left in the match.

This marks the second defensive shutout this week for the Tiger Cubs and Lilly wasn't hesitant of patting his team on the back for it either.

"We have only given up two goals so far this season, and one of them was penalty kick. So that really was an unearned goal," Lilly said. 'It's going to be hard to score on us this year. Our backline is good and our keeper is too.

"It's going to be interesting when we play Speedway, who has been averaging seven and eight goals a game, to see how our defense holds up," Lilly added.

North Putnam head coach David Moller knew that Thursday's match was going to be rough. He just didn't know how rough it would be.

"Their a good team and it's simple as that," Moller said. "We had some defensive lapses in the first half. We came out strong for the first ten minutes, then we gave up that PK and things went south from that point on.

"They are an experienced team," Moller said. "They are soccer smart and know hat to do when they win the ball. They're just more experienced that us."

With Thursday's win, Greencastle moves to 5-0-2 on the season while North Putnam falls to 0-6-1.

Greencastle is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Brazil for a match wit the Northview Knights at 12:30 p.m. while North Putnam travels to Covington for an 11 a.m. match with the Trojans.
