ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam High School girls soccer team took on West Central Conference foe Speedway for the last time Wednesday night.

Wednesday was the last time the Cougars and Sparlplugs would meet up at conference foes, as Speedway is leaving the WCC after this year.

But it wasn't a happy send off for the Cougars as they fell to the Sparkplugs 8-0 with Speedway scoring three goals in the first half and five in the second.

North Putnam's defense contained the Sparkplugs defense for the first 9:30 minutes. But after Speedway scored its first goal with 31:33 left in the first half, the Cougars defense began to stall. The Plugs scored its second goal of the night at the 22:21 mark and again at the 20:14 mark. ending the first half with a 3-0 lead.

Speedway came back after the half and tacked on five more goals for the final.

"We have a short roster with only 13 girls on the team and in the second half we were tired," NPHS coach Willie Gaskins said. "Speedway came out stong in the second half and we played them well, they are just a tough squad to beat.

"I expected a tough game tonight (Wednesday) and i just wanted the girls to work on the things that I've coached them on,"Gaskins added.
