GCSC students encouraged to be 'vigilant' at school bus stops

GREENCASTLE -- Parents of Greencastle Community School students received a notification Thursday evening of a situation at a school bus stop this week.

In part, a recorded notification sent to parents' phones by Superintendent Robert Green said, "We want to bring your attention to suspicious activities at one of our school bus stops this week. On two different occasions, an adult has attempted to approach a high school girl before her bus arrived."

Green said the girl reported the incidents to her teacher, who in turn notified assistant principal Russ Hesler. Hesler got the Greencastle Police Department involved.

"The Greencastle Police have been notified," Green's message continued. "They are investigating, and they have asked that everyone be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to the police department."

Green's message to the parents came at the request of GPD investigators, who urged all to be "vigilant."

The superintendent said he had no further information he could share regarding the information.

He also said while people hear about these sorts of incidents on the news, those who live in small communities such as Greencastle assume they won't happen there.

This week's events, Green said, are a reminder that they can happen here.

Anyone with information should call the Greencastle Police Department at 653-2925.
