2nd Paws on Parade features Frisbee dogs

Brown Sugar, one of the many dogs available for adoption at the Putnam County Humane Shelter, will be at the Second Annual Paws on Parade at the DePauw Nature Park Oct. 3.

GREENCASTLE -- Paws on Parade promises all kinds of dog gone fun this year. From noon to 3 p.m. on Oct. 3, the DePauw Nature Park will be filled with canines and their owners.

This is the second year for the PoP fundraiser for the Putnam County Humane Shelter. It is a combination of sponsored dog/human walk, pet-related informational exhibits, demonstrations, food and fun.

From noon to 1 p.m., people can take their dogs for a stroll or a run through the Nature Park and pick up a few prizes as they go. Upon returning to the exhibitor area, they will find numerous displays with dog trainers, Red Cross cat and dog first aid instruction, a dog "communicator," Putnam County Animal Control and dog-related items for sale.

Micro chipping of pets will be available, along with experts to talk about puppy mill investigations, mental health benefits of owning a pet and the link between abuse and domestic violence.

The big attractions are performances by the American Mantrailing Academy (www.americanmantrailing.com) and America's Best Frisbee Dogs (www.frisbeedogs.com).

These dogs perform regularly at NFL half times as well as during other professional sporting events. After their performance, they will remain onsite to give those interested Frisbee training.

Cost for POP is $10/person escorting no more than two dogs.

People are encouraged to seek "sponsors" for the walk. All animals participating must have current vaccinations and all Nature Park rules must be obeys.
